How many times have you heard that sex makes the gym burn like a training session? Well, we do not want to disappoint you, but it’s not exactly like that.
How many calories do you burn with sex? The question of the questions, the one we asked ourselves almost all after an afternoon sex marathon, convinced that, besides having spent the afternoon above in an enjoyable way, making love can be an alternative to physical activity.
But is it so or is it one of the dear, old false myths? Spoilers, immediately: the calories burned with sex are not so many. In short, that “lazy” sex the morning you just woke up probably did not make you burn the equivalent of a GAG lesson.
Clarifying the issue is Men’s Health, which examines the scientific findings in this regard.
In 2013 it was a study of the University of Montreal to scientifically approach the binomial sex-calories burned, and it did so by asking 21 heterosexual couples, aged between 22 and 28, to wear a special detector (Sense Wear) during the sex and wear it even during 30 minutes of running. The results, published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE, showed that the burnt “amorous” calories were inferior, and not just compared to those consumed with real physical activity. 100 calories VS 276, the fight is unequal. And these numbers refer to males and sexual activity of about 25 minutes, women (needless to say) burn even less. Looking for men when they make love burn about 4.2 calories a minute, women around 3.1. From the #mainagioia series.
That same year another study has recovered data from a 1984 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine which shows that the average duration of sexual relations is 6 minutes and if we multiply this figure with the average calories burned per minute, it results that on average a man burns 24.6 calories per sexual intercourse and a woman 18.6.
Ok. Maybe we can not (more) consider the Sunday morning quickie as a session in the gym, but think about it, sex improves mood, strengthens your immune system, but above all, it is fantastic regardless of calories burned (Samantha Jones docet)!
